Wolfers Lighting Staff Spotlight: Meet Joyce Gravel
We love shining the spotlight on our team members so you can get to know more about the people who make Wolfers Lighting so special.
Today, we shine the spotlight on Joyce Gravel, the manager of our lighting showroom in Waltham. Every day, Joyce exemplifies creativity and diligence. Our customers love Joyce!
We recently caught up with her for a Q&A session.
Q: How many years have you been in the lighting industry, and what drew you to this field?
Joyce: Thirty-four years ago, the restaurant I’d been running was selling out and I was going to be unemployed. Unsure of what I would do, a friend put in a good word for me with a small lighting showroom/electrical supply business. They took a chance on me, despite the fact that the only lighting knowledge I had was of a 60-watt lightbulb!
Fortunately, I fell in love with the field. The more I learned, the more I realized what I didn’t know. Lighting became a passion and a lifetime of education.
Q: How did you come to be with Wolfers?
Joyce: A friend of mine was working for what was Standard Electric at the time, and she recruited me. I had been working in lighting for nine years by that point, and I thought I knew everything there was to know…until I walked in the door here! It opened up a whole new world, because there was still so much to learn.
Q: How do you spend your time when you’re not in the lighting world of Wolfers?
Joyce: I like to read, cook, and spend time with family and friends. My son Nick and his beagle named Bentley live in the Midwest. Traveling to see them is always an adventure. I make that trip a few times a year. The drive gives me the solitude that I rarely get when I’m working.
I also took up running in my thirties because I find it’s a great way to disconnect from the crazy life of retail. A few years ago, a friend convinced me to try a half marathon. I’ve run a few now, but I don’t see any full marathons in my future.
And recently, my boyfriend Stephen introduced me to golf. I’m terrible, but he likes playing with me anyway. With a few lessons, however, I’m hoping to play as well as him if not better!
Q: What are a few of your dream lighting pieces for your own dream home?
Joyce: I’ve always liked the Naomi collection from Framburg. The mica gives the fixture a warm glow, and the crystals add just a little bit of sparkle.
Another favorite of mine is the Torchlight Ring Chandelier from Hammerton Studio. With choices of blown glass by Hammerton’s own artisans and several finish options, this handmade piece is stunning.
Stop by Wolfers in Waltham and say hi to Joyce!
