Tips for Choosing the Perfect Foyer Lighting

Posted on by admin

The right foyer lighting can go a long way in creating a positive initial impression. After all, you want everyone (visitors and inhabitants of the residence alike) to feel safe and welcome as they enter.

Whether you have your own multi-story foyer or you’re designing the lighting scheme for an apartment complex’s entryway, we can help.

Here are some tips for choosing the perfect foyer lighting:

1. Choose a foyer fixture that is proportional to your space. With a tall entryway, consider the vertical space as well.

  • A foyer chandelier or large pendant can be a fantastic selection that interacts with the architecture while drawing the eye upwards.
  • A flush or semi-flush mount fixture can also work as a statement piece.

2. Use this handy calculation: the height of your entryway + the width of your entryway (in feet) = how many inches wide your fixture can be. This provides a guideline of what will be proportional; there’s no hard and fast rule.

3. Don’t underestimate the power of accent lighting. While you might be concerned with ambient lighting, or the overall illumination, keep in mind that the right accent lights will complement/reinforce your other efforts while demonstrating your design aesthetic.

  • Sconces work well as decorative fixtures, but they can also provide additional light or draw the eye down a hallway.
  • Table or floor lamps can also serve as decoration. For example, a table lamp could accent a console table..

Here are some favorite foyer light fixtures ones that definitely make a statement.

Foscarini's Caboche Suspension is both glamourous and minimal.

  1. Foscarini’s Caboche Grande Suspension. The clear acrylic beads have a crystal feel without the weight of a traditional crystal fixture. Bonus: Foscarini recently redesigned this piece so that it now features LEDs, which provides better efficiency and increased durability. This fixture even comes in a flush-mount configuration, perfect for lower ceilings that still want to make a statement. See it on display in Allston.

Tech Lighting's Patrona's height can add sparkle to a 2-story entryway.

  2. Tech Lighting’s Patrona Suspension. Another great foyer chandelier, the Patrona’s dynamic “branches” pack a visual punch, and the integral LED diodes provide years of maintenance-free beauty. Choose from two versatile finishes: Satin Gold (displayed in Waltham) or Satin Nickel (displayed in Allston).

    Maxim's comet adds dynamic sparkle.

  3. Maxim’s Comet. What happens when you combine thousands of beveled glass crystals and hang them from a 36-inch chain? You get a foyer fixture that will definitely get people’s attention. See the Comet on display in both showrooms (note: you can easily adjust the chain’s length).

  4. Hudson Valley Lighting’s Cresson. Inspired by treasures from a Paris flea market, this 8-light chandelier features aged brass and rock crystal accents. This foyer light would look at home in a traditional or transitional environment. See it in person in both showrooms.
