Staff Spotlight: Meet Susan Arnold
This month we are shining the spotlight on lighting designer Susan Arnold. Susan has been part of the Wolfers family for over 20 years and since our merger with System 7 she has been an integral part of our projects team! Read on to learn more about Susan.
When did your interest in the world of lighting design begin?
Ha I knew nothing of lighting but always had a passion for design as a child. My Mom and Grammie were like Martha Stewart – They were always entertaining and redecorating every room in the house one room at a time. My dad was a great wallpaper hanger, painter, handyman. Lighting came into my life when I was looking to expand my Interior Design background. There was an ad in the newspaper for a lighting showroom called ‘Wolfers.’ I applied and quickly realized how big the world of lighting is and how much it affects our lives and well-being. 27 years later, I am still here designing lighting for all types of projects!
You have been a lighting designer with Wolfers for many years and sit on the board of lighting committees. When Wolfers merged with System 7 and The Boston Shade Company, you joined the projects team, how has that changed your day to day work-life?
I especially love the integration of shades – I now can add Natural lighting as another layer of light into my designs. I call it the fifth layer of light. The technology side you can’t avoid. If you can start a car and an oven from your phone why not control your complete home? Controls are often thought of as complicated, but when I ask clients about their life style choices, they all want simplicity. This is exactly what an app from your phone or a keypad is- simple.
Can you tell us any of your personal favorites? Lighting manufacturers, designers, even specific fixtures?
I love Hammerton Studio, the Parallel Collection is definitely a personal favorite. I also love the Bezel Gem and Urban Loft collections by them. Another favorite manufacturer would be Currey and Co, they have some really fun stuff!
What about your free time – what are you up to?
I love the outdoors and I very much enjoy traveling. Yoga, the gym and the beach (I like to snorkel) are some of my hobbies. I have one redheaded granddaughter and in February I’ll have a grandson! They live in southern California with their Mom and Dad. My son lives in Colorado and will be getting married this year in Boulder.
Thank you, Susan!
