Our Favorite Outdoor Wall Sconces from Hubbardton Forge

Posted on by admin

Last month we discussed Hinkley outdoor lanterns as well as several landscape lighting basics. To further your education, here are a few more tips to keep in mind when selecting outdoor wall sconces:

1. Proportion, proportion, proportion. When installing lights, you need to keep proportions in mind, using doors and windows as your guide. Here are some rules of thumbs:

  • Front porch lights: 1/4th to 1/3rd the height of your front door
  • Garage sconces: 1/4th the height of the garage door
  • Hanging lanterns: Choose a fixture that is approximately 1/5th the height of your door. As a guide, center your hanging lantern and hang it 6” above the door. Adjust the height based on the look and feel of your entryway.

2. Get the correct UL Listing. Make sure you carefully read the labels.

  • UL Damp means the fixture is suited for humid locations with no direct exposure to water this fixture is good for partially covered porches, canopies, etc.
  • UL Wet Listed means the fixture is suited to come in contact with rain, snow, and other wet elements this fixture works well for uncovered porches, walkways, and gazebos.

Now, let’s look at some of our current favorite outdoor wall sconces from Hubbardton Forge. Regular readers of our blog already know we’re huge fans of this Vermont-based company filled with skilled artisans who make each fixture by hand.

Not only that, but Hubbardton introduced its Coastal finishes last year. These finishes are perfect for New England homes, especially those by the water. The finishes are guaranteed for life against chipping, flaking, and peeling.

1. Portico Small Sconce. Elegant and stately, this sconce will add instant appeal to your entryway. See it in black in both showrooms. Available in nine other finishes, including the Coastal finishes.

2. Beacon Hall Sconce. Hubbardton used the coach lanterns of the early 19th century as inspiration for this classic sconce one that’s sure to add just the right touch of panache wherever you decide to place it.

3. Rook Outdoor Sconce. This is not your grandmother’s wall sconce. We love its curves and sleek lines, not to mention the incandescent lamp, which provides a warm, welcoming glow.

4. Tourou Sconce. Hubbardton Forge says the design is in honor of traditional Japanese stone lanterns. Hubbardton’s goal was to make them easy to mount on your home’s exterior. Looks like they achieved their goal and then some.

5. Modern Prairie Hanging Lantern in Mahogany. OK, so this is a hanging lantern, not a sconce, but it’s so lovely that we wanted to include it here. You can see it in Waltham and Allston. (Psst. We have a sconce version as well.)
