Bathroom Lighting Tips

Posted on by admin

Every room in the house has its own distinct lighting needs and lighting challenges, and the bathroom is no different. The bathroom is the place where we go to get ready, relax, and recharge, so it makes sense that decorative lighting and task lighting need to come together to create one unified space.

Our lighting consultants can help you determine the ideal amount of light and other considerations for your bathroom. But, in the meantime, here are some bathroom lighting tips you can follow.

Think form and function.

You need good lighting to see by, especially for those everyday tasks that take place in the bathroom, such as shaving, flossing, applying makeup, and so forth.

At the same time, you want to have an overall lighting scheme that supports the vibe you’re trying to achieve. Typically, people see the master bathroom as a calm oasis (think of those long soaks in the tub with a good book and glass of wine, for example).

Your bathroom’s size will also influence your lighting d

ecisions. In small bathrooms, mirror lights will illuminate the entire room, but in larger bathrooms, you’ll want an additional ceiling light fixture for general lighting.

You can adequately light tub and shower enclosures by placing an enclosed damp-location recessed downlight in the ceiling. We also recommended using these downlights over whirlpool baths or in saunas. Recessed lights are not only functional but decorative as well.

Understand your different task lighting options.

When we talk about task lighting in relation to the bathroom, we typically mean the lighting that’s affixed on, around, or near the bathroom vanity mirror. Here are three options that work well.

1. Vanity lights/bath bars. These work great, especially when you apply them above the mirror. They come in 1, 2, 3, (and more) light combinations, which makes them incredibly versatile. In terms of size, the general rule of thumb is to buy a fixture that is ¾ the length of your mirror.

One of our favorites is this LED wall sconce from George Kovacs, which provides wonderful, even lighting.

2. Sconces. Sconces are great to evenly illuminate the face when you place them at eye level on either side of your mirror. Plus, they come in many styles, so you’re bound to find something that works with your aesthetic.

For proper mirror lighting, place sconces with glare-free glass diffusers ideally 36” apart for even illumination or above the mirror above eye level to avoid glare.

3. Lighted mirrors. Just as it sounds, LED lights integrate seamlessly with your mirror, providing even lighting and energy efficiency to boot.

You can check out the Rae Mirror Kit in our Waltham lighting showroom. A special co-extruded remote phosphor LED channel hugs a high-quality mirror in three mirror configurations. The LED channel provides an amazingly slim profile less than one inch deep with flawless, even illumination and great color reproduction.
