Adding Value to Your Home with Beautiful Exterior Lighting

Posted on by admin

When discussing lighting products for your home, it’s easy to focus on the interior only. After all, that’s where you spend the bulk of your time, right? But that doesn’t mean you should overlook your home’s exterior.

OK, backing up a second, let’s make sure we clarify some terms. Exterior lighting includes the lights at your front door/entryway, post lights, back door lights, and the lights at your garage. While you might think of exterior lighting as being purely functional, it also influences the look and feel of your home, which is why you need to spend time thinking through an exterior lighting plan, just as you do for your home’s interior.

Proper exterior lighting offers several important benefits:

  • It enhances safety measures. Lighting up walkways, steps, and so forth makes it easier for guests and residents alike to see where they’re going and to get in and out of the house safely.
  • It enhances security measures. A front door lantern that lights up when someone approaches and timers that turn on various lights around your home, both inside and out, can help deter intruders. Not to mention security cameras will capture much better footage from areas that are well lit.
  • It adds curb appeal. Remember the saying “you only have one chance to make a first impression”? Thoughtful placement of lanterns and other lights gives your home an inviting feel. Taking it a few steps further, you can even devise a landscape lighting strategy, which can highlight things like garden beds, tress/shrubs, stone walls, and architectural details. Check out the landscape lighting Q&A we recently conducted with Jeff Livingston, one of our lighting experts.
  • It can add extra living space. For example, a well-lit porch can serve as an extra “room” where people congregate, especially during warmer months.

Here are a few examples of some gorgeous exterior lighting products to consider.
