Reading barn
The
Lighting Challenge:
This antique barn was converted into a residence
over 45 years ago, but the interior lighting was never sufficient,
due to ceiling heights, wood beams that created shadows and other
structural elements that posed lighting challenges.
The
Wolfers Solution:
Last year, the homeowner was referred to Wolfers
by her electrical contractor. She only liked her house at Christmas—when
all the lights were on! A Wolfers lighting consultant suggested
a variety of ambient, task and accent lighting—and plenty
of creative thinking to accomplish the difficult installations.
In the foyer, a 25-foot-high ceiling created a
large “dark hole,” and support beams and large-scale
antiques on the walls cast dark shadows. We used a large, decorative
chandelier to spread light throughout the area and enhance the entire
foyer.
Low ceilings in the kitchen posed a unique challenge.
They are actually the second story floorboards, so recessed lights
were ruled out immediately. Instead, we installed a bendable, wall-mounted
track that follows the beams and tucks behind the cabinet’s
crown molding. We angled the light to illuminate the counters below.
Finally, we added cove lighting (indirect lighting) to shed a warm
glow across the ceiling, making it look higher.
